Project · Supply-chain contract
VitiSOS · Sustainable viticulture on volcanic and clay-limestone soils
A supply-chain contract of national importance that brings together wineries, protection consortia and research centres to reconcile innovation and tradition: resistant grape varieties, fewer plant protection products, supply-chain certification and new markets.

The instrument
A supply-chain contract is an integrated programme that starts from farming and runs through every segment of the supply chain across several regions. It is signed between the Ministry, ISMEA and the lead applicant, to which the beneficiaries that have signed the Supply-Chain Agreement give a collective mandate. The NRRP measure funds, through grants and subsidised loans, projects that reduce emissions, waste and pesticide use, in line with the “do no significant harm” (DNSH) principle.
Lines of work
Research
Resistant varieties
Trials of varieties resistant to downy and powdery mildew and, using new genomic techniques (known in Italy as TEA), stronger resistance for historic Campanian and Sicilian varieties without changing their character.
Vineyard
Fewer inputs, more data
Streamlined farming practices and measurement of the sustainability of all farm activities, saving fertilisers, fuel and labour.
Quality
Supply-chain certification
Protection of the wines’ characteristics, traceability, origin labelling and a single sustainability certification system (SQNPI, VIVA).
Market
Promotion and wineries
New low-impact wineries and facilities to close the supply chain and develop wine tourism; market research, reputation and promotion in Italy and abroad.
Value-enhancement plans for the consortia
For the Vesuvio and VitiCaserta protection consortia the project includes dedicated plans, built on the weaknesses identified in the analysis: limited awareness of designation wines, little presence in modern sales channels, tourism poorly integrated with wine, insufficient training of operators.
- Events — masterclasses, wine forums, sustainable wine weeks, international fairs
- Training — courses and coaching for HoReCa operators and students of hotel and agricultural schools
- Communication — digital campaigns, press office, interactive guides and 3D maps of the territory
- Certification — more wineries with sustainability certifications, zoning of the territories
My role
I conceived the project and developed its strategy together with the consortia, designing the value-enhancement plans for the designations. The programme was coordinated and developed by consultants from Sef Consulting and Agriengineering, with scientific support from Diagram Group, Istituto di Genomica Applicata and INBB.
